Yuja Wang and Nicholas Canellakis

Superstar phenomenon Yuja Wang, in a rare appearance, is joined by Artistic Director Nicholas Canellakis for a thrilling program of romantic warhorses by Chopin and Rachmaninoff. Celebrated for her charismatic artistry and captivating stage presence, Yuja Wang is set to achieve new heights during the 2018-19 season, which features recitals, concert series, as well as season residencies and extensive tours with some of the world’s most venerated ensembles and conductors. She begins the summer of 2018 with a performance at the Tanglewood Music Festival with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, followed by a tour with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra and Kirill Petrenko. Later engagements include an extensive recital tour to South America, as well as several concerts with the Munich Philharmonic and Valery Gergiev throughout Asia in autumn. She is featured as an Artist-in-Residence at three of the world’s premiere venues: New York’s Carnegie Hall with a season-long “Perspectives” series, the Wiener Konzerthaus with a “Portrait” series, and also at the Luxembourg Philharmonie. Engagement highlights include concerts with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra at Versailles, the Summer Night Concert at the Scho¨nbrunn Palace with Gustavo Dudamel, and a tour with the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra for the first performances of John Adams’ newest piano concerto. Yuja’s international breakthrough came in 2007 when she replaced Martha Argerich as soloist with the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Two years later, she signed an exclusive contract with Deutsche Grammophon and has since established her place among the world’s leading artists, with a succession of critically acclaimed performances and recordings. Yuja was named Musical America’s Artist of the Year in 2017. Hailed by the New Yorker as a “superb young soloist,” Nicholas Canellakis has become one of the most sought-after and innovative cellists of his generation. Canellakis’s recent highlights include a Carnegie Hall concerto debut with the American Symphony Orchestra; concerto appearances with the Albany Symphony, Erie Philharmonic, Pan-European Philharmonia in Greece, and New Haven Symphony as Artist-in-Residence; and a recital of American cello-piano works at New York’s Lincoln Center. His 2018-19 season includes solo debuts with the Lansing, Bangor, and Delaware symphony orchestras; Europe and Asia tours with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, including appearances in London’s Wigmore Hall, the Louvre in Paris, the Seoul Arts Center, and the Shanghai and Taipei National Concert Halls; and recitals throughout the United States with his long-time duo collaborator, pianist-composer Michael Brown. Canellakis is an artist of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, and is a regular guest at many of the world’s leading music festivals, including Santa Fe, Ravinia, Music@Menlo, Bard, La Jolla, Bridgehampton, Hong Kong, Moab, Music in the Vineyards, and Saratoga Springs. He was recently appointed the prestigious position of Artistic Director of Chamber Music Sedona. Filmmaking and acting are special interests of Mr. Canellakis. He has produced, directed, and starred in several short films and music videos, including his popular comedy web series “Conversations with Nick Canellakis.”
