This is a part-time, hourly position with limited benefits. Must be able to work split shifts, weekdays, weekends and/or evenings as assigned. Set hourly rate is $14.85 per hour.

Under direction from the Recreation Center Supervisor and the Parks and Recreation Director, the Lifeguard will assist patrons using the Recreation Center water facilities.  The primary function of an employee in this class is to teach swimming and water safety skills; to monitor public use of the swimming pool area, including performing in rescue, emergency, and first aid situations; answer inquiries from the public; and perform cleaning and sanitation duties.  Additionally, an employee in this class assists in class and event registration and operations. Expected to be committed to the department motto, doing “whatever it takes” for the success of the team and department, including performing other related duties as assigned.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:  Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following tasks, knowledge, skills and other characteristics.  This list is ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY and is not a comprehensive listing of all functions and tasks performed by incumbents of this classification.

TASKS:

  • Teach swimming and water safety skills to adults and children.
  • Monitor swimming pool area to prevent, recognize and respond to emergency situations.
  • Perform rescue and first aid functions.
  • Enforce pool rules and regulations fairly and uniformly.
  • Answer inquiries and provides information to the public regarding pool hours, activities and events.
  • Clean pool area, concessions area, bathrooms and dressing rooms, maintaining them to county health and sanitary standards.
  • Document accidents and other pool-related incidents according to City requirements.
  • Participate in mandated training, including but not limited to, rescue skills, in-service training, and physical conditioning.
  • Process swim lesson registrations.
  • Assist in special events, performing such tasks as leading children in games, and judging contests.   
  • Perform all work duties and activities in accordance with City policies and procedures.
  • Work in a safe manner and reports unsafe activity and conditions. Follow City-wide safety policy and practices and adhere to responsibilities concerning safety prevention, reporting and monitoring as outlined in the City’s Safety Handbook.
  • Assist in other department programs including, but not limited to, adult sports, therapeutic recreation, youth sports, special events, and Recreation Center rentals.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Customer service principles.
  • Ability to perform safety sensitive lifeguarding, first aid, and CPR duties, sometimes in a stressful environment.
  • Use tools common to the performance of the duty, including whistle, megaphone, rescue tube, and first aid equipment.
  • Work with customers of all age ranges, from infants through adults and older adults.
  • Communicate effectively with the public and other employees.
  • Ability to remain attentive and focused on the position’s safety sensitive duties. 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:  

  • Ability to work in an indoor or outdoor aquatic environment that may include working in temperatures up to 110 degrees, in adverse weather conditions, and while exposed to allergenic substances.
  • Ability to lift objects up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to sit for up to 45 minutes per rotation on a lifeguard chair or station and be able to climb a ladder to reach the station.
  • Sufficient clarity of hearing, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to discern emergency situations, verbal instructions, and telephones.
  • Sufficient visual acuity, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to discern emergency situations, discern colors, and comprehend written work instructions, and rules and regulations.
  • Sufficient sense of smell to be able to detect odors.
  • Sufficient manual dexterity, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to respond quickly in an emergency situation and operate control mechanisms and make fine adjustments.
  • Sufficient strength to swim 500 yards, demonstrating use of freestyle, breaststroke, and side stroke.
  • Sufficient body flexibility and balance to perform rescue and first aid operations and occupy a lifeguard station accessible by ladder.
  • Ability to work outside in summer months.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  •  Must be able to obtain lifeguard, community first aid certification and CPR for the Professional Rescuer.
  •  Certifications upon employment. The ability to obtain food handler’s card may be required upon request. Must have or be actively working towards a high school diploma, or its equivalent. Must be able to proficiently demonstrate the ability to perform all tasks to an acceptable level, as determined by a supervisor, within six months of hire.
